Shorty is jazzed and waxes poetic…. what about, you say? Well, about jazz, of course. Read on to get the picture and watch the video under our History and the Arts button…enjoy!

    Hey Kids,
So, what comes to mind when you think about jazz? Ocean breezes? Sandy beaches? Victorian homes? Well, if they don’t…they should. Don’t you know what time of year it is? Twice a year, the Cape May Jazz Festival comes to town, and spring is one of them.
Now, in case you didn’t know, this is no small town thing. This is big time, knock you out, A list performers doing their thing, up close and personal. From Philly, New York, Baltimore, DC, from wherever, the number of people who travel to the southern tip of the Jersey shore has grown to an astounding number. And, like so many things in life (myself included), it gets better every year.
I’ll admit, jazz is an acquired taste. But so is Windows Vista, subtitles, and thai food, and yet, I see a whole lot of people doing that stuff.
For those of you who can dig it, here’s a heads up to head down the shore. It’s the time of year for all that jazz.

“What is hip…tell me, tell me…if you think you know”, sorry we had to quote Tower of Power lyric when mentioning The Spot by Jillys on the Ocean City boardwalk. Racks of very cool clothing, Ed Hardy, Christian Autigier…read Shorty’s Blog and watch the video on our ‘Shopping’ button…enjoy!

    Hey Kids,
I don’t know if ‘the fat lady’ ever really breaks into song at the Jersey shore. She may grind out a little hum in mid January but never lifts off. It seems that there is always something going on somewhere.
That’s particularly true in autumn. There’s still people strolling the beach with only wet-suited surfers braving the slowly dipping water temperature. The activity moves onto the boardwalks. More shops than you might imagine remain open during the fall, many through the holidays. What’s even more appealing is it is like a four month clearance sale, moving this summer’s wares out onto the boards at marked-down prices in order to clear house for summer 2011 goods.
As much as I tease Chelsea about her addiction to shopping, Dane sports a healthy weakness himself. It was he who invited Chelsea up onto the Ocean City Boardwalk a few seasons ago to introduce her to a clothing store that even took her by surprise…the ‘Spot’. And that’s the story behind this week’s feature.
There are a lot of sounds to be heard at the Jersey shore: laughter, ocean, birds, music…but no overweight soprano belting out italian opera.

It seems Chelsea and Dane have done all this before…..read Shorty’s Blog and watch the video on our ‘Home’ page….enjoy!

    Hey Kids,
Ok, so here’s the story. We did a feature on the Ocean City Music Pier about two years ago. It was a fun little piece that showed off the property, expounded upon it’s history and rattled off a few of the many ‘A’ list performers who have taken the stage there. The feature is as relevant now as it was then.
So, when the city of Ocean City asked us to do another, highlighting it’s 2010 season, we were glad to oblige. We set up our cameras to capture a children’s show and gave the mic to Laurie Howey, Communications Manager. It became obvious the new season, chock-filled with name entertainers and special programming, should have promotion of it’s own. This newer feature appears on our home page and, because it showcases events happening this fall, deserves your immediate attention.
The fun part is Dane and Chelsea, somehow armed with the old script, realizing they had done it before…on camera. Even the off-camera banter between them and writer/director, Dambra Sabato, is captured.
What may seem to be out-take questions and replies actually comes together as a new feature with some very amusing results.

Chelsea and Dane play dress up again at this wonderfully historic bed & breakfast in Cape May…rather, Chelsea does….Dane is a little confused? Read Shorty’s Blog to get a handle on what we mean and watch the video of the ‘Southern Mansion’ under our ‘Overnight’ button….enjoy!

    Hey Kids,
For those of you who have been part of the ShorefireNewJersey.com trek for the past couple of years, you know Dane has a real affinity for B&Bs
(I mean the buildings, not the brandy…..well, maybe the brandy, too). He especially enjoys when a Bed and Breakfast goes out of it’s way to establish itself with an original flavor, whether it is a theme, a feel or genuine antiquity.
For those of you who have been part of the ShorefireNewJersey.com trek for the past couple of years, you know Chelsea has a real affinity for old movies and dressing up. She especially enjoys going out of her way to see similarity in places she finds and places in films. And, her costuming happens at the drop of a hat.
The Southern Mansion in Cape May was built in 1863 and a favorite northern vacation for folks down south. The architecture is striking, the decor is authentic and the charm is undeniable. It fits Dane’s criteria for a quality property and Chelsea’s criteria for a character part.
Yes, my dear readers, this feature was a golden opportunity for southern hospitality and, as they say, ‘if the shoe fits…..’

Chelsea and Dane had fun role playing in this video shot on the grounds of the Deep Cut Gardens in Monmouth County. Quite an interesting story here, but let Shorty tell you all about it in this weeks blog…read on…and watch the video found under our ‘ECO/OUTDOOR’ button….enjoy!

    Hey Kids,
Every once in a while, we come across a place that not only has a great attraction, but a great story, to boot. And when we do, it truly becomes a matter of ‘one picture worth a thousand words’. And in this particular case, the words are as fascinating as the flowers.
Ever heard the phrase, ‘More than meets the eye’? That’s Deep Cut Gardens in Middletown, New Jersey. Not only is the property one of the most beautiful botanical gardens you can visit and enjoy, it once was the property of Vito Genovese, an Italian mafioso who rose to power in America during the 1920s. More fascinating is that he designed and put in gardens, lived there, then left it to return to Italy. Sort of like the ‘Sodfather’? Sorry, I couldn’t help myself.
Given the bloom of the surroundings and the tall tale at it’s root (again, sorry), this feature is a costume piece with no dialogue between our co-hosts, just a narrative delivered by Diane Allen, a knowledgeable member of the Monmouth County Park System. It’s a bit different from our usual fare but well worth the watch. The attraction stems from two realities seeded in opposing grounds sharing the same bed.
Apparently, I have little to no resistance to puns today. Not to worry, this too shall pass.

Chelsea and Dane were talking about taking a day off to go horseback riding in the area, but after a bit of research, they unearthed a center that caters to the handicapped….and the horses just love it! We thought it deserved to have the story told, so……read on for Shorty’s Blog and see our video on the Atlantic Riding Center for the Handicapped under the ‘Cache Box’ button….Enjoy!

    Hey Kids,
Take it easy, take it easy. A lot of you responded to my last blog. I wasn’t making fun of Chelsea and Dane. I was having fun at their expense. It’s an entirely different thing. Both are talented performers and fine human beings in their own right. It’s just that these two rights come out all wrong. Not wrong in a harmful or hurtful way. Wrong in an ‘odd couple, accept the inevitable, hide your giggles in plain sight’ kind of way. And that, my friends, is not malice. It’s entertainment.
Given the reaction, we’ll take a little break this week and give the more sensitive among you a chance to catch your breath, dry your little girlie tears, and stop your whining (not that there’s anything wrong with that). This week we offer a lovely little feature about a lovely group of people who do lovely work in a lovely little town. Our lovely co-hosts do a lovely job. Feel better? Lovely.
Much like the blog I wrote back in April about the Humane Society of Ocean City, the work, dedication and joy given by the folks at the Atlantic Riding Center for the Handicapped in Egg Harbor Township, should not go unnoticed or unheralded. Worth watching, I assure you.

Chelsea and Dane love working together, but when you send them on a search mission….in a car….together…….well it’s….it’s….let’s let Shorty tell you in this weeks blog, shall we? Watch the video under our ‘Overnight” button….enjoy!

    Hey Kids,
By now, most of you are pretty familiar with our co-hosts, Chelsea Di Pilla and Dane Anthony, and have seen enough ShorefireNewJersey features to know how they get along. I have written about their relationship in my blogs, doing the best I can to describe how much I enjoy watching their best efforts at communication and cooperation self-destruct. I am not a negative person (despite whatever you may hear to the contrary), but some joys last a lifetime and a good laugh is hard to come by.
Apparently, many of you feel the same, judging by the comments made in response to my blogs and the featured videos. To those of you who have chimed in, I thank you from the bottom of my trouble-making heart. I invite the rest of you to speak your piece. Don’t worry about stirring things up. I do it all the time.
So, for those of you who need a little clarification, I recommend you take a peek at our feature on the Doctor’s Inn Bed and Breakfast in Cape May Court House. It is victorian friendly and hospitality plus. The opening and closing segments are perfect examples of their ‘relationship’, a true case of the blonde leading the blind.

  • Did You Know?

Chelsea and Dane recently ‘walked the boards’ in Atlantic City. Read Shorty’s Blog and come along, while watching the video posted under our ‘Atlantic City’ button and see how much you know about one of the worlds famous icons…..enjoy!

    Hey Kids,
When ‘the boys’ decided they would do a feature on the Atlantic City Boardwalk, I was a bit concerned. Not that the AC Boards aren’t a true piece of Southern New Jersey history and tradition, it was more a matter of its having been done before. You know, like a million times.
There’s always a lot to do and see up there, but people know that. They know there are casinos and plenty of shops. They know they can get breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner up there. People know there are amusements and entertainment. People have seen hundreds of features on the boardwalk. It was a good idea, but a very, very old one.
I like when ‘the boys’ surprise me. Not like when they put jalapeno oil in my eye drops or superglue my zipper shut. Nonetheless, surprise me is what they did, with a feature that doesn’t bore you with what you do know, but quizzes you on what you don’t. This interactive feature is a whole different kind of fun.
I haven’t said any of this to them and I don’t intend to. And I would appreciate it if you kept it to yourselves. At least not until after they’ve brushed their teeth in the morning. Surprise!

Chelsea and Dane were really ‘gettin their groove on’ at a recent taping at ‘Boogie Nights at Resorts’. Even Shorty was ‘hustlin’ (even though he’ll never admit to it)….just like back in the….well, it was just too much fun. Read on and then watch the action on our ‘Atlantic City’ button….enjoy!

    Hey Kids,
Every once in a while, shooting a feature is just so much fun. All the ingredients for information and entertainment were present when we arrived and the amusement factor was built in. Better yet, it was the perfect environment for Dane and Chelsea to enjoy everything going on around them and still find something to bicker about. And I didn’t do anything to start it…..this time.
Boogie Nights at Resorts Hotel and Casino gave Chelsea a chance to dress up and Dane a chance to get down. Admittedly, Dane looked pretty spiffy and Chelsea did more than her share of ‘boogying’. Despite their different chronological perspectives, they knew a good time when they saw one. The folks at Boogie Nights did all they could to keep the crowd happy and on the dance floor.
I have no hidden agenda in recommending this feature this week. Oh, sure, there’s contrasting positions and conflicting opinions between our co-hosts but that, by now, is to be expected. Beyond being fun to watch, I am recommending this feature based purely on it’s merit as a party waiting to happen. So, I’d advise you to take the ride to Atlantic City, stop in at Resorts, drop in at Boogie Nights, and let it happen to you.

I scream, you scream, Shorty’s screaming…well, not really, but he is moaning a bit, so we went on the road to LBI and indulged ourselves….read on for Shorty’s blog and see the video on under our ‘Kids Stuff’ button…enjoy….

    Hey Kids,
We’re in the thick of it now. The Jersey shore is deep into the summer swell of vacationers and visitors. All with only one thing in mind…to have a good time.
I remind myself that tourism is at the heart of New Jersey. I remind myself that a million people have saved up to get here. I remind myself the streets and the traffic will thin out after Labor Day. I remind myself that this is what the shore lives for and that hitting people with a flyswatter is sociably unacceptable and, surprisingly enough, a punishable offense. But I digress.
Once in a while, we find that magical place that ignites the inner fire in Chelsea and Dane. This time, that search led us up the Garden State Parkway and down Long Beach Island to Beach Haven. If you’ve never been, you should put it on your itinerary. All of Long Beach Island is one big stretch of getaway adventures, from the splash and frolic of beaches and amusements to the natural beauty of Barnegat Light.
Filming the Showplace Ice Cream Parlor threw our co-hosts into blissful frenzy. For Chelsea, it was a slice of musical theater and for Dane, it was a sundae so big it had it’s own zip code.
